THE IMPORTANCE OF FRIENDSHIP

In Japan they have a word for family that is translated as 'kenzoku'. Many of us have people in our lives whom we call kenzoku. Here at the British School, Alexandria we as students sometimes do not get the idea that a friend is not always someone who is cool to hang out with and that friendships should last much longer than a week. Friendship should be much more than that.

In most schools around the world and sometimes here at the British School, a student who strives for the success of himself and for the success of others simply doesn't fit in. The way society revolves around what someone wears and not what someone feels or thinks can often be lonely and horrible. We must all learn to appreciate simplicity and humbleness.

My favourite quote comes from Mahatma Gandhi. He said "be the change you wish to see in the world." In my opinion, it is important to be the friend you want to have.

Many of us tend to only befriend people who are like minded and this is wrong we must be open to the world and to people who we may think of never befriending because we are all part of the same society, people may think that I am talking about this perfect immaculate world which we can never make or be a part of but in most cases if we tend to open our eyes to the reality that is facing us we might.

Our closed mindedness can often keep us buried away under mountains of stereotypes, rudeness and bullying. However, we have the power and knowledge to enlighten future generations for years ahead. We also have the knowledge to inspire future generations!

What are we waiting for?

We can be mature and become enlightened thinkers now.

We do not have to wait until we are adults to act well with each other and become the true leaders of tomorrow. So let us all put down our electronics and go out and make new friends, meet new people and smile. Smiling is key because when you smile at people that smile spreads. Let us all become friends and accept the problems of others, help them and try to overcome as a group. In this way, it helps students to become a closer community. It has started to happen at the British School, Alexandria but we can definitely do more. We can become one large 'kenzoku’ so we can reign tomorrow like family not like enemies and show the world our true potential.
